Reclaim Your Garage: Project Car Storage in a Shipping Container
Got a project car swallowing the garage? A container is a clean, secure way to store it—plus you can outfit it for wrenching when you’re ready. Here’s how to set it up right.
The Basics
-
Yes, a car fits. But with standard container doors at the end, you typically can’t swing the car door open once you’re parked. Think storage first unless you modify access.
-
Ventilation matters. Gas fumes and moisture need a path out. Protect your car by keeping air fresh and reducing condensation.
Good → Better → Best
-
Good (Storage-Only): Use the factory double doors. Roll in/out carefully, close up. Great for off-season storage. Don't forget vents!
-
Better (Drive-In/Walk-Out): Add a side roll-up door so you can pull in and step out comfortably. Place it near the driver’s side.
-
Best (Everyday Garage Use): Side roll-up plus electric, a workbench and shelves for organized, quick grab-and-go access to tools and parts.
Must-Haves for Vehicle Storage
-
Vents: At least two opposite-side vents, one high, one low on the walls; consider a solar powered fan.
-
Security: BYO lock or consider a lock box.
-
Drip & tire care: Drip pan or mat; inflate tires properly, consider stands for long sits.
-
Battery & fuel: Battery tender can be plugged into container electric package. crack the windows slightly, and avoid storing with a full tank unless well-vented.
-
Safety: Keep a fire extinguisher at the door.
